Skinned Knees

The weather has been quite pleasant here lately (well, I guess that isn't such a surprise, sorry) and the boys have been wearing a fair amount of shorts and t-shirts. Scrapes and scabs aplenty! This is actually less "costly" for Finn than wearing pants, since he tends to rip holes in the knees with regularity, which costs us money and time for patches or new pants. That or he can look like a little hobo who wears rags for clothes. It happens. Finn is now 4 1/2 years old, as of the 13th. We're now getting him a little involved in organized activities, which has its pluses and minuses. The minuses are that things cost money and we have to drive him there! But so far he's done a version of soccer with strong parent participation, and tonight was his first swimming lesson in a long time. (We'd done some water-babies type stuff in the past, but it had been a LONG time.) He did great! The only problem from his perspective was that it was only 30 minutes.
He's very proud of his new swimsuit that says "Totally Jawsome" with a shark's mouth. Graham and Finn are really getting along pretty well these days, and while they do play pretty rough, they make each other laugh a lot. Graham can apparently laugh even while getting manhandled as I tell Finn to leave his brother alone. At some point the laughter turns to tears, of course! In this orange (the official color of Fortney Boys, LLC) photo, I think they are both being mice. Graham is "Super Mouse" while Finn is "Flash Mouse."

Obviously here they are "Batman" and "Tiny Batman."  The warm weather has brought out the backyard hammock as well. While last year they were good about not playing on it, this year, not so much. If you turn the volume up to 11 you can hear them giggling. I took the movie from our bedroom window.

Why is this here? We have a lot of snails and slugs in our yard. This one is only about 2 inches. The much rarer banana slugs (never seen in our yard, yet) are more like 6-8 inches.

Home Alone

You'll be happy to hear I haven't gotten any further injuries since getting home Thursday night. In case you're wondering, I do NOT recommend spraining your ankle in your third trimester; pregnant women and crutches are not a good combination. (I missed a deck stair and rolled my ankle pretty bad on Saturday, then visited the emergency room in the middle of the night - did we mention that?) Fortunately, it seems like this is a pretty mild sprain, and after spending most of Sunday and Monday on the couch, I had pretty much abandoned the crutches by Wednesday. The main reason was that it didn't feel too bad to put weight on my ankle. Another factor was that I wasn't convinced I wasn't going to hurt myself worse in some bizarre crutch accident. And then there was the fact that whenever I picked them up Finn went into complete hysterics, pointing at them, crying, and screaming, "Ow! No! Mama! Ow!" So limping it is.

I'm trying to enjoy my solo weekend. I've had super fun girls' nights out both Friday and Saturday. I've slept in as late as I could (8 am!) yesterday and today, because I'm 35 weeks pregnant and who knows when sleeping in is ever going to happen again. I'm treating myself to dinner wherever I want tonight, once I figure out where that is. Mona's getting plenty of quality lap time as I try to keep my ankle elevated. But... it's kind of ... quiet... around here.

Finn and Jonathan sound like they're having fun back in Minnesota, and they come home tomorrow. I hear Finn's been to the pool, and the zoo, and is partying his little heart out. Here he is with his cousin Jamie last Wednesday.
He also has a BRAND NEW COUSIN, Jamie's little brother Wyatt, born Thursday afternoon. Welcome to the world, Wyatt! Sorry I missed you, and can't wait to see you at Christmas.

And here's Finn feeding deer at Osborne Center in Iowa last Tuesday. My favorite bit is at about the 30 second mark, where he decides the bear is boring and he wants to go find the deer again.

Wish the boys luck flying without me, and check out more photos on Flickr.

Nice shiner, kid!

So....you know how Finn is rough and tumble? And how I was just blogging about how I think it's good to let Finn have some space on the playground, and take some bumps and bruises? Well, on Sunday night he was right in front of me, in the kitchen, crawling out (vertically) of a plastic tub, when he slipped over and fell out face-first onto a wooden ring stacker. Yeah. The vertical wooden stick part hit him about a half inch below his eye. Yeah. It was really frickin' scary. There was a tiny amount of blood and fair amount of swelling. And much crying. Here he is about 20 minutes after the incident though, chilling on Katie's lap, while watching internet movies of cute animals, which he found pretty soothing. Like this slow loris getting tickled.

I was kind of a mess for the next hour, since I'd seen it happen, and knew how close he came to maybe losing an eye. The next morning I went to work and before my class I was still pretty shaky. Now I'm a bit more calmed down. Here is a pic of Finn from this morning:

The nurse hot-line that we phoned said that the bruise would probably stick around for about 2 weeks. The swelling went down pretty well, which is good, considering he did NOT allow any ice to be placed on his cheek.
And on to another adventurous day in the world....
